A long
time ago, (two centuries before what is now described
as the, 'Current Era') a writer named Anitpater,
in a moment of pure genius came up with 7 Wonders
of the World. And he wrote them down. Of his
7, 'Wonders' only the Pyramids remain, the others
long gone. Of course, the 6 have been replaced
so we still have, '7 Wonders of the World', albeit
6 different ones.
Why am I writing this, you ask. Well the thing
is, I have, for 5 years now, been guiding my
guests around the west of Ireland and I have
enjoyed every single moment of it. I don't
like when people say of a place, 'oh it was
the most beautiful place on earth', etc. Because
there's no such place as, 'the most beautiful
place in the world'. But, I do say, and I am
proud to say that, the west of Ireland is absolutely
beautiful. And in parts it is truly special.
And you can have a profound experience while
cycling through this area. And there are very
few places in the world where you can cycle
for a week and not ride through one single
traffic light, (okay there's quite a few, if
you want to cycle in the remotest of remote
places, but you know what I mean).
'Moments of wonder' are very special times
in our lives when something we see/hear or
just experience touch us in a way that leaves
a genuine mark on our hearts. Lots of people
who have travelled with us over the past 6
years have had these moments.
Moments like the day I was cycling along tending
my flock, happy as Larry, (an Irish expression
for just being very happy), when I came around
this corner to find Debbie from Minnesotta
sitting on a wall, in tears. Obviously I got
a wee fright and was quite concerned so I asked
her was she okay. She told me they were joyous
tears because she was cycling along, (happy
as Larry) and she came around that very corner
and the scene she was confronted by was so
beautiful that she decided to stop and take
it all on for a few minutes. Well as she sat
there she became a tiny bit emotional and shed
a wee tear. I'm not afraid to tell you this
story because she was not afraid to tell everyone
about it that night at dinner, and it is a
very nice story. Tiny road, Donegal, just before
Slieve League, the highest sea cliffs in Europe.
